Federal Signal Emergency Lights and the LED

Over the past few years, manufacturers of emergency lighting like Federal Signal have incorporated LEDs into Lights Bars for Police and Fire Vehicles. LEDs are slowly replacing or complimenting conventional lights such as rotating lights and strobe lights. Both the rotator, a motor driven light, and the strobe light, a high intensity light, are costly to maintain and are a heavy drain on the vehicle's battery. The LED - Light emitting diodes have been around commercially since the 1960's. The effect was published by a British scientist who published an article in 1907 when he was undertaking an experiment on crystal

detectors. An LED is similar to a transistor in make up. When manufactured with certain materials, an LED will produce light when current passes through it. LEDs are low maintenance and are a low drain on the vehicle's battery.
